  • 4.0 out of 5 stars from SeVen -- Great story, fun history lesson : I really think the wife tells the story, not just from a spouse's perspective, but from an objective vantage. She shares the good, bad and ugly. She makes little excuses for her deeds or Bumpy's. By the time you're done reading you have to admit Bumpy seemed like a standup kind of guy. The one minus, especially towards the end, were the egregious grammar errors. Still, it is a delicious story and oh so worth the read! ( Reviewed in the United States on July 20, 2019 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Coley -- Excellent read! : The history included in this book is not only outstanding but verifiable. Sometimes you can forget while reading that this was one man's story because the authors did an amazing job including those around him as well. I don't care that this man was considered a gangster, because by the end of the book you clearly see a good man who took lemons and turned them into gold! The fact that publishers would not see this as something readers would want to read... Shows how far we still need to come. This is real life, real history. Should become required reading! • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Anthony -- Great Read! : I enjoyed reading this book. Over the years I’ve heard about the legend of Bumpy Johnson. Recently a tv show about his life came out and intrigued me even more, so I decided to search for a book about his life. Who better to tell his story than someone who was with him through thick and thin. It wasn’t exactly a traditional read, but I really enjoyed her authentic delivery. For those publishers who don’t think people want to hear about the life and times of Bumpy Johnson, you are incorrect in your assumptions. I’m glad Mrs. Johnson was able to tell his story before she passed and thank you to Mrs. Miller for making it all happen. ( Reviewed in the United States on February 10, 2020 )
  • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Nola Heart -- Best 5. 99 I ever spent : I purchased the Kindel edition of this book. Best 5.99 I ever spent. I really wish their was a tip jar because I owe someone some more money. ( Reviewed in the United States on March 17, 2015 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from LBurnett -- Really Great and Sobering Story : I really enjoyed reading this book I didn't want to put it down it was never boring and I was amazed how Mr. Bumpy Johnson rose from an unknown street thug to the renowned Godfather of Harlem. There are so many that don't believe who Bumpy Johnson was, but I know family members (an great aunt who is still alive at 98) that migrated to Harlem from Georgia in the 30's and 40's that knew him in passing and what he was, they whispered about him with awe. Frank Lucas story of his life is a fairy tale even the detective that arrested him said he was a liar and a snitch. ( Reviewed in the United States on September 27, 2014 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from BONES -- Excellent book couldn't put it down : I really loved the book the only problem I had it was to short. I read numerous books on the Italian mafia. But never came away feeling sentimental towards any criminal like I did towards Bumpy. Now I'm not advocating any criminal or criminal behavior but the storyline did it for me. But remember like any criminal or Robin Hood type there is always a hypocritical side to the man, they still kill and steal and commit unrighteous and immoral acts. And that can't be excused.or justified. ( Reviewed in the United States on September 26, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from The Hunt family of NYC -- A true adventure to Harlem of yester year : This book is so we'll written. The name dropping, makes for great reading and authentiy. ( Reviewed in the United States on July 13, 2021 )
  • 4.0 out of 5 stars from TheTeaneckGirl -- Like Strolling Through Harlem in the 50's : This book tells the story of the original "American Gangster" Ellsworth 'Bumpy' Johnson as told by his wife Ms. Mayme Johnson. As with any bio book about a infamous person written by a loving spouse you will see a certain amount of bias, especially when it comes to violence but Ms. Mayme did a fine job of telling about the good and the bad of the legendary Bumpy Johnson. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Michael Verrecchia -- Tremendous : This book sheds a lot of light on who Bumpy was. I finished the book in 2 days. I couldn't put it down ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 26, 2021 )
